Week 54 Show Me a Sign
August 21, 2019
Dear friends and family,
Week 54
It feels as if tomorrow I will be seeing you all again because of how fast the time goes! Speaking of which, I do not have a lot of time, so I will share with you a miracle I saw this week, and something I have been studying recently:
Two months ago, we taught a man named Jake for the first time, and then his number stopped working, and we had no address. We thought he had blocked us. We met him out biking last Saturday! He told us that he has read 1/2 of the Book of Mormon, and he thought that WE were the ones who had blocked him!
Show me a Sign
Recently, I have been studying the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, the claim of Joseph Smith being a true prophet, and the evidence of an apostasy actually occurring before the 2nd coming of the Savior. After almost a full week of studying this, I found a verse in Alma 30, in which Korihor, an Anti-Christ demands a sign from Alma. Here is how that event goes down:
verses 39-45
"39 Now Alma said unto him: Will ye deny again that there is a God, and also deny the Christ? For behold, I say unto you, I know there is a God, and also that Christ shall come.
40 And now what evidence have ye that there is no God, or that Christ cometh not? I say unto you that ye have none, save it be your word only.
41 But, behold, I have all things as a testimony that these things are true; and ye also have all things as a testimony unto you that they are true; and will ye deny them? Believest thou that these things are true?
42 Behold, I know that thou believest, but thou art possessed with a lying spirit, and ye have put off the Spirit of God that it may have no place in you; but the devil has power over you, and he doth carry you about, working devices that he may destroy the children of God.
43 And now Korihor said unto Alma: If thou wilt show me a sign, that I may be convinced that there is a God, yea, show unto me that he hath power, and then will I be convinced of the truth of thy words.
44 But Alma said unto him: Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God? Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets? The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.
45 And yet do ye go about, leading away the hearts of this people, testifying unto them there is no God? And yet will ye deny against all these witnesses? And he said: Yea, I will deny, except ye shall show me a sign."
Well as the story goes, Korihor gets his sign, and it doesn't end well. Go read the rest of the chapter if you have a burning desire to do so, but now I will give to you just a few examples of the prophets and the Holy scriptures that testify of the apostacy, restoration, and the Book of Mormon:
-1 Timothy 4:1-3
-Mark 12:1-9
-Isaiah 29:10-12, 18 (See Joseph Smith History 1:59-65 for the fulfilment of that prophecy)
- Moroni 7:8-9
- 2 Nephi 33:10-11
Not only do these things testify of the truthfulness of this church, the Lord's church, but they also testify that God is real, His Son is Jesus Christ, and they love us, and have a plan for us. I know that is true!
Firm in the Faith,
- Elder Cozzens
